Fairfield school board member resigns

Fairfield City Schools is looking for candidates to replace Tom Heisler, who resigned Tuesday from the board of education because he is moving out of the district.

The board aims to name Heisler’s replacement by its next board meeting, which will be Aug. 6. Heisler and his wife are moving to Reily Twp., which is part of the Talawanda school district, he said during Monday’s regular board meeting.

“My wife and I are trying to simplify things a little bit. We have a large house with a swimming pool and two stories, so we’re looking to move into a ranch (house) and a quieter life,” he said, adding he had not anticipated the move at the time he was elected.

The Board of Education will interview applicants to replace Heisler, whose term expires at the end of 2017. He was elected in 2013, along with current board members Dan Hare and Michael Berding. Heisler works as an independent software consultant.

Superintendent Paul Otten said the timeline would be similar to when Vice President Balena Shorter was named to the board in 2009 to replace Diana Bailey. The vacancy was announced July 22, and Shorter was selected Aug. 13 of that year.

On Monday, the other board members thanked Heisler and lauded him for always being professional, even when he disagreed with others.

“Mr. Heisler is a person of high integrity and character — two characteristics that I think are imperative of being a good board member. He always asked questions, when he did not understand something, and asking those questions, he stretched my thinking,” Hare said. “I challenge any prospective board candidate who applies to fulfill his term to come to the table with those characteristics.”

Heisler became tearful on hearing the kudos of his fellow board members.

“I would like to wish the remaining members of the board, administrators, teachers, staff, and especially the students of our district great personal, academic and professional success as to rise up to meet the challenges life presents. Strive to be the best you can be, inside and outside the classroom,” he said in his final remarks.
