Hamilton man pleads guilty in fatal shooting outside bar

A Hamilton man has admitted guilt in a January fatal shooting outside a Seventh Street bar.

Charles Deonte McDonald, 24, of East Avenue, pleaded guilty Thursday afternoon to murder, felonious assault with two gun specifications and having weapons under disability for the slaying of Robert Goens on Jan. 15. outside the Hard Times Bar. The indictment designating McDonald as a repeat violent offender was dropped.

McDonald has been held in the Butler County Jail since the shooting in lieu of $1 million bond. Butler County Common Pleas Judge Jennifer McElfresh set sentencing for June 23. McDonald faces 21 years to life in prison for the murder charge and gun specifications and an additional eight years for felonious assault and three years for the weapons under disability charge.

Prosecutors indicated the shooting was captured on surveillance video. The shooting occurred about 2:25 a.m. and Goens, 23, of Hudson Avenue, was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, according to police. He died of his injuries at an area hospital several hours later.

A second person, Torriauno McCullough II, 24, of Stephens Street, was wounded when a bullet grazed his right arm.

Defense Attorney David Washington said McDonald wanted to spare his family and the victim’s family a trial. He added the prosecution had a solid case against McDonald that made it difficult to defend with “such strong evidence.”

McDonald was convicted in 2009 of felonious assault and given a seven-year prison sentence, according to Butler County Common Pleas Court records. He was released on parole in October, according the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.
