The Butler County Coroner’s Office told the Journal-News that the investigation into a deceased person found in the 200 block of Cereal Avenue over the weekend has been officially classified as a homicide.

The deceased has been identified as 41-year-old Joshua L. Combs. An autopsy was conducted, and the primary cause of death is still pending.

Officer Kristy Collins of Hamilton Police Division said the homicide is still being investigated. A police report reveals that officers were on the scene early Saturday morning looking into a report of a deceased person at 210 Cereal Ave.

The report adds that at the time the body was found, “The victim was found unresponsive at the listed location.”

“This is being treated as a homicide, but no further details are being released at this time,” Collins said. “The investigation is still ongoing.”

There have been eight fatal shootings in Hamilton since the first of the year. In addition, there was one officer-involved fatal shooting in 2016.

In September, 37-year-old Calvin “CJ” Simmons Jr. was shot and killed. He was the eighth person fatally shot in the city in 2016. Simmons was the brother of community activist and Hamilton pastor Shaquila Mathews.

Simmons was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his stomach at his home about 3:45 a.m. in the 2200 block of University Boulevard. He was transported to Fort Hamilton Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Investigations Division is asking if anyone has any information about the crimes to call 513-868-5811 ext 2002.
