Controversial arcade game ‘Harambe Kong’ based on Cincinnati zoo gorilla shooting

A new retro-arcade game is getting attention for making light of the death of Harambe the gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo in 2016.

In the game, called Harambe Kong, players control Harambe and jump around the screen trying to catch food. But if they touch a child, the gorilla dies a bloody death.

The real Harambe, a 450-pound western lowland gorilla, was shot and killed by a zoo worker last year after Harambe grabbed a three-year-old boy that fell into the zoo’s gorilla enclosure.

“I think someone who is ultimately offended by this game may need to question themselves a little bit and maybe question their morals: ‘Why am I so offended by a pixalized gorilla being shot?’” said the game’s programmer, Tyler Saling.

Saling says he is working on a mobile version of the game.
