Catholic elementary school’s expansion approved

Mother Teresa targets fall 2016 addition of three classrooms.

The Liberty Township Board of Zoning Appeals has unanimously approved the 21,975-square-foot building expansion plans for Mother Teresa Catholic Elementary School.

Completion of the the approval process keeps the school on pace to have additional classes of kindergarten, first, and second grade in the fall of 2016.

The $3.2 million project will add an academic wing to the existing building near the intersection of Yankee and Millikin Roads in Liberty Twp.

The addition will house 16 classrooms and create dedicated spaces for a library, Spanish and art instruction, tutoring services and an expanded kindergarten.

MTCES is one of only three independent, private Catholic elementary schools in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. At present, it serves 462 students in grades kindergarten through eight. School officials project gradual enrollment growth over the course of several years resulting in a student body of 675.

“With the zoning approval in hand, the dream to expand has become a reality,” said principal and CEO Sister Anne Schulz. “We are eager to share this news with our community and open our doors to more youngsters.”

In 1998, a small group of parents founded the school in the basement of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Monroe.

This will be the school’s fourth facility expansion since making its permanent home in Liberty Twp. in 2002.

“We are looking forward to playing our role in accommodating the anticipated population growth along the I-75 Corridor,” said school parent and expansion project manager Tony Reed. “We started this school because there was a demand for a Catholic elementary school in the West Chester-Liberty Township area. We continue to strive to meet this demand.”
