As mid-February nears, many people may find that they’ve gotten off track with their New Year’s resolutions to improve their health.

Those who want to learn about everyday strategies to get healthier can get advice from a naturopathic doctor who has worked with celebrities including actress Demi Moore, fashion designer Marc Jacobs and athlete Reggie Bush, and has appeared on TV shows including “The Dr. Oz Show,” “The View” and “E! News.”

Dr. Lindsey Duncan, ND, will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the Courtyard Springfield Downtown. Duncan is the founder and CEO of Genesis PURE, which offers products that help people enhance their physical and financial health.

In advance of his local appearance, we asked Duncan to provide tips on how people can really change their eating and lifestyle choices to stay on track with their New Year’s resolutions and experience a healthier 2013.

1. "Wake up with lemon and water. This simple little tip may make you feel so much better. Water acts as one of nature's best pick-me-ups after a full night without hydration, plus the lemon and water combination works to cleanse the internal organs after a night of hard work, especially our liver and our gallbladder."

2. "Achieve regularity. The root of most common health concerns is deep within the human body, in our digestive tract. If you're feeling a little backed up, and you're not eliminating waste, you're storing toxins, which can lead to brain fog, dull skin and hair, and even depressed mood. To support healthy and regular elimination, I recommend more fiber, more water and a product called Genesis Pure Liquid Cleanse."

3. "Slim down. There is no denying that there is a serious concern in the U.S. with the growing obesity epidemic. Every pound you lose can make a significant difference on how you feel and your overall health. Start with a healthy diet and exercise along with healthy supplements like Genesis Pure's Green Coffee Bean extract."

4. "Find balance in your diet. Thanks to our Standard American Diet (SAD) full of fried foods that are highly acidic, many of our bodies are out totally out of balance. We need to maintain an alkaline balance in our bodies, and the best way to do that is to consume more dark, leafy green vegetables and eliminate or avoid acidic foods like greasy foods, red meats and the biggest culprit — soda."

5. "Find balance in your life. Along with greasy, acid foods throwing off our natural balance, stress can also add to the acidity in our bodies. While we can't stop stress, we can learn to adapt to it better. I recommend deep breathing and daily prayer or meditation. Even five minutes can provide you with a whole different outlook on life, especially when done in conjunction with deep breathing."

6. "Make an effort to exercise. Many of us dread the gym, but even the smallest amounts of movement can generate results for our overall health, including mood. Start by skipping the elevator and taking the stairs, or park your car at the back of the parking lot, and walk to the store entrance, then brief 10 minute walks over the lunch hour, and finally working up to workouts where you are panting and sweating. There are opportunities everywhere to add a little movement to the day."

7. "Get your nutrients. Believe it or not, our soil is very depleted of nutrients, which mean that many of the foods we eat are void of many nutrients that we need. If you're not taking a daily multivitamin, you're not getting the nutrients you need. While there are many on the market, I recommend a liquid form for easy absorption; my preferred product is Genesis Pure Daily Build, which is a bit more expensive but well worth the extra money."

8. "Step up to superfoods. If you're not consuming superfoods daily, you're missing out on some serious natural, healthy benefits. Superfoods are foods like Acai, Noni, Goji and Mangosteen, which contain large amounts of nutrients with minimal calories. I've spent my life in search of these amazing foods, and I have seen incredible success with thousands of my clients and their use of superfoods for many aspects of their health."

9. "Remember to rest. Too much or too little sleep is associated with shorter lifespan, and how often we sleep affects everything from our waistline and mood to our heart health and mind. You absolutely must get sufficient sleep. I recommend at least eight hours every night, and [if] you're having trouble sleeping, please see my tips two through eight because healthy lifestyle can support healthy sleep."

10. "Have fun. Remember not to take life too seriously, and have a good time because none of us gets out of this one alive. Everything turns out better when approached with a positive attitude and a smile. Plus, researchers suggest that those who smile and laugh more live longer."
