Urban Meyer to teach character and leadership class at Ohio State

Buckeyes coach retiring after Rose Bowl on Jan. 1

Urban Meyer will teach a course in character and leadership at Ohio State’s Fisher College of Business after retiring as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes in January.

"Urban Meyer brings extensive leadership experience and a unique perspective to students seeking to engage with top leaders," read a statement by the Fisher College of Business. "The course will leverage Coach Meyer's professional insights, challenges and successes, as well as the military experiences of co-instructor Lt. Col. Charles Buchanan, to help inform students as they develop their individual leadership styles."

Meyer said he has met with Buchanan a dozen times.

"He's awesome," Meyer told 10TV in Columbus, "and obviously the Fisher School of Business, we have a great relationship with them and the dean. I look forward to it."

Meyer will coach the Buckeyes through the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1 before offensive coordinator Ryan Day takes over as head coach.

Meyer, 54, announced his retirement Dec. 4. He said at the time he planned to stay involved with the university.

“God has a plan,” Meyer said. “I'm not quite sure what it is. (Athletic Director) Gene (Smith) and I are extremely close, and we discussed that.”

At the same press conference, Meyer said he loves Columbus and plans to continue living there.

“I've always been a Buckeye as long as I can remember,” Meyer said. “Gene Smith, like I said, our relationship has always been good. It's over the top now. And I trust him with my life. And our families are very close. So when he says jump, I still say — I'm going to still call him boss. I believe in Ohio State. I believe in the spirit when you walk around this campus. I believe in Buckeye Nation, because I lived it my entire life. I believe that this is a different place. And I want to help in any way I can. And I believe in our new head coach.”
