Reds take high school pitcher from Florida in second round

Lyon Richardson is from Jensen Beach, Fla.

The Cincinnati Reds stayed in the state of Florida in the second round of the draft Monday night, selecting right-handed pitcher Lyon Richardson with the 47th overall pick.

The Reds drafted Florida Gators third baseman Jonathan India, who's from Coral Springs, Fla., in the first round with the fifth overall pick.

Richardson is from Jensen Beach High School (Fla.). Coral Springs and Jensen Beach are both located on Florida’s east coast, about 86 miles apart.

Richardson is 18 years old. He was born on Jan. 18, 2000. He has signed with the University of Florida.

"The thing that makes Lyon so special to me is his consistency," Jensen Beach coach Corey Cooke told TCPalm.com. "We have had some dominant pitchers come through Jensen Beach in the past, but the thing that stands out is his ability to throw strikes at all times. Additionally, he wants to pitch in the biggest moments. I've seen him on the ropes — 2017 at Vero in extra innings stands out — and deliver a knockout. He was our closer in years past because he wanted to pitch in the toughest situations. He lives off that."
