Reds add former Dragons Winker, Travieso, Ervin, Stephens to 40 man

The Cincinnati Reds filled the remaining holes on their 40-man roster Friday, mainly with former Dayton Dragons.

Former Dragons Nick Travieso, Jesse Winker, Phillip Ervin, Aristides Aquino and Jackson Stephens were added, along with pitcher Keury Mella, a former San Francisco Giants prospect who was acquired in the Mike Leake trade.

Winker was drafted out of high school as a supplemental first rounder. He played with the Dragons in 2013, winning the Midwest League home run contest at Fifth Third Field and has been a steady presence in the Reds top of the team’s prospect rankings. Winker played 106 games for Triple-A Louisvile in 2016, hitting .303 with a .397 .OBP and a .782 .OPS. He had three home runs, 45 RBIs and 22 doubles.

Nick Travieso as a first-round pick in 2012 out of high school. He played two seasons in Dayton, and led the MWL in victories in 2014. He was 5-7 last year with a 3.84 ERA at Pensacola.

Aquino was MVP of the Florida State league in 2016 for Daytona. He spent most of 2015 with the Dragons, but missed two months with a broken rist. He’s noted for his strong arm and presence in right field.

Philip Ervin was drafted in the first round in 2013. He had strong season in Dayton after he was promoted from Billings, but missed the last two months of the season with an injury. A former Cape Cod Summer League MVP, he’s struggled since.

Stephens played 2013 and 2014 in Dayton, and came into his own in high-A Daytona in 2015 with a 12-7 record with a 2.97 ERA. He was promoted to Pensacola last year and went 8-11 with a 3.33 ERA.

Meulla spent 2016 with Daytona and had one start at Triple-A Louisville. He was 9-9 with a 3.76. Meulla was one of two prospects traded to the Reds when starter Mike Leake was sent to San Francisco.
