Reds acquire area product to complete trade with Red Sox

The Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday acquired Red Sox minor league third baseman Nick Northcut as the player to be named later in the Aug. 1 trade that sent outfielder Tommy Pham to Boston.

Northcut, a 2018 Mason High School graduate, hit 30 home runs and drove in 75 runs this season between High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland. He hit. 219.

Northcut, 23, spent the 2021 season at Low-A Salem. He hit 17 homers, had 77 RBI and batted .261. He led the Low-A East Division in slugging (.513), doubles (32) and extra base hits (51) and ranked second in RBI and tied for third in home runs.

The Red Sox drafted Northcut in the 11th round (340th overall) in the 2018 MLB Draft.

Northcut was named the Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year after his senior season at Mason. He was a three-time, first-team, all-Greater Miami Conference selection for the Comets. He was the GMC Player of the Year in 2016,
