Recruiting roundup: Michigan offers GWOC defensive end, Alter QB picks up ACC offer and more

This has been a busy week on the recruiting front as several players from around the area picked up new offers from colleges in major conferences.

The highest-profile school to hand out an offer to an area prospect this week was Michigan, which became the 12th school to take a shot at Northmont defensive end Gabe Newburg.

The Thunderbolts standout also tweeted that he received an offer from Iowa and told ElevenWarriors.com he plans to visit Ohio State with Northmont teammate Jestin Jacobs on Friday.

The Wolverines and Hawkeyes joined a group that already included Michigan State, Rutgers, Cincinnati and Miami University, among others.

He is the No. 36 player Ohio in the 247Sports Composite Rankings for 2019 while Jacobs is No. 26.

Just ahead of Newburg is Isaiah Gibson, a two-way lineman from Springfield who posted Tuesday night he has been offered by Maryland.

That is 18 offers for Gibson, who can also count West Virginia, Minnesota, Iowa State, Kentucky, Cincinnati and Miami U. among his suitors.

Gibson and teammate Moses Douglass were in Columbus on Monday to watch Ohio State practice and went to West Virginia on Tuesday.

Continuing up 247’s list we find Connor Bazelak, the No. 28 player in Ohio and the No. 1 quarterback prospect in the state.

The Alter signal-caller has more than a dozen offers as well after adding Duke this week and North Carolina last week.

Meanwhile, another area quarterback made news in a different way.

Andre Gordon, the quarterback and point guard at Sidney, announced he will concentrate on basketball in college after previously considering football as well.

On the flip side, Springfield’s RaHeim Moss may be able to consider both sports as he looks to his future.

The Wildcats' leading scorer was already fielding football offers before getting one from Cincinnati for basketball this week.

Lastly, here is a blast from the past: Remember Messiah deWeaver? He was a standout quarterback at Trotwood-Madison and Wayne before signing with Michigan State.

He opted to leave the Spartans program over the winter and has transferred to East Mississippi Community College, where he will be re-recruited in hopes of finding a new home in Division I after this coming season.

First to enter the ring? Toledo.
