Prep wrestling: Oligee, Brown lead four Madison qualifiers to district

COVINGTON — As far as wrestling goes, Madison High School junior Quincy Brown got a late start picking up the sport in junior high. He’s doing his best to make up for lost time.

Brown qualified for next week’s district meet with a runner-up finish at the Division III sectional tournament Saturday at Covington. He was one of four Mohawk district qualifiers.

“Quincy, he’s one of those kids that are pure athletes,” Madison coach Stan Oligee said. “He had a little setback a couple weeks ago with some cartilage damage. Now he’s back strong. We’re looking to make that push to try and get him to state.”

Brown pinned Carlisle junior Tyler Carl in 1:36 to reach the semifinals. There he pinned Twin Valley South junior Dillon Howard in 1:48. Brown ran into trouble in the finals, though, suffering a hard-luck 5-3 sudden victory loss.

Brown went to overtime with Mechanicsburg sophomore Caden Coleman, who scored a takedown to claim the first-person-to-score victory. The loss will serve as inspiration for Brown. He suffered a tough 4-1 loss at last year’s district meet that left him in fifth place — one spot shy of qualifying for state.

“It’s insane. My go-to match was heartbreaking,” Brown said referring to last year’s district match. “It was a huge match. It was one of those matches where you visualize things you know you did wrong. I wish I could go back to that again. It would be a much different match.”

He likely felt the same Saturday. Still, Brown has done well picking up the sport so fast. He came into this season even better prepared both mentally and physically.

“It was more of a focus. My mood changed. I went from being a power wrestler to more of a technical wrestler,” Brown said. “Instead of going nuts, I learned to calm myself down and use my strengths and abilities.”

Brown decided to give up basketball for wrestling in junior high. He hasn’t regretted the decision, even with that difficult district loss last season.

“I think it drives him a lot,” Oligee said. “He’s just matured so much over the summer. He’s more focused this year.”

“I’d go out to some wrestling practices and mess around,” Brown said. “My seventh-grade year came around and I said I was going to try this. I just had fun with it. I picked it up and went with it.”

Brown will be joined at district by sophomore Devin Oligee, who won the 170-pound title. Freshman Preston Brown finished third at 220 and junior Joey Kendrick was fourth at 285 to also advance.

Carlisle qualified four wrestlers to district. Junior Justin Ritchie was second at 126, sophomore Kaden Langdon was fourth at 152, senior Ernie Bray was third at 160 and senior Kaleb Carl was second at 285.

The D-III district tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at Hobart Arena in Troy.
