Prep football: Here’s five local Week 7 matchups to keep an eye on

Here are five local prep football matchups in the Journal-News coverage area to keep an eye on in Week 7:

1. Chaminade Julienne (6-0) at Fenwick (4-2)

A strong matchup between two of the best teams in the Greater Catholic League Coed Division. If you like offense, this is the game for you. These squads have combined for 463 points through the first six weeks. Fenwick quarterback Sully Janeck has thrown for 1,056 yards … he’s the first Falcon to crack the 1,000-yard mark through the air since Ricky Davis in 2012.

2. Sycamore (4-2) at Fairfield (5-1)

Fairfield keeps churning toward that anticipated Greater Miami Conference showdown with Colerain in Week 9, but the Aviators — under the direction of former Fairfield coach Scott Dattilo — can’t be taken lightly. Indians running back JuTahn McClain has 946 rushing yards through six games and is about to become the first FHS 1,000-yard back since Antoine Moore in 2005.

3. Middletown (1-5) at Hamilton (0-6)

It’s two teams trying to find their way, but it’s also a long-standing rivalry that dates back to 1912. Hamilton would certainly have been considered the favorite heading into the season, but good fortune hasn’t been a Big Blue thing so far in 2018. And the Middies have been better than advertised, even at 1-5.

4. Purcell Marian (4-2) vs. Badin (4-2) at Monroe

The Saturday night game features a couple teams in the thick of their respective playoff races, Purcell in Division V, Region 20, and Badin in Division III, Region 12. Former Badin coach Dave Wirth has the Cavaliers on the upswing, although their four wins have come over teams with a combined 6-18 record. Badin has shown some grit, winning its last two games in overtime and on a last-second field goal.

5. Edgewood (5-1) at Winton Woods (5-1)

This was already going to be a very difficult contest for Edgewood. Now that the Cougars are coming off a stunning 10-6 loss to Ross, the climb figures to be even steeper. Winton Woods is the reigning Division II state runner-up, and Edgewood will be hard-pressed to match up with the Warriors’ athleticism.
