Prep basketball: Short-handed Madison cruises past Carlisle in SWBL Buckeye

MADISON TWP. — The matchup of one-loss teams proved to be a blowout Friday night.

Madison High School’s boys basketball team dominated visiting Carlisle 71-45 despite playing without leading scorers Levi McMonigle and Grant Whisman, who are recovering from sprained ankles.

“We’ve had a little adversity early in the season,” Madison coach Jeff Smith said. “But our bench and supporting cast really stepped up tonight.”

Carlisle came out from the opening tipoff with an early 7-3 lead, highlighted by Isaiah Dean’s five points. But the Mohawks responded with 15 unanswered points to gain the lead and never looked back. It was 34-22 at halftime.

In the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter, Madison put on a free-throw shooting clinic. The Mohawks were 17-of-19, with most coming in the the later stages of the game.

“We lost a really close game last week that was due to bad free-throw shooting,” Smith said. “This time we were exceptional, so it was really good to see that.”

Junior guard Tristan Sipple led Madison with 17 points.

“We played great,” he said. “We came out with great intensity, and our defense was tremendous in the first half and just got the job done. We got a bunch of key steals and had a lot of good rebounds, and we just played good.”

Jake Munafo contributed 16 points for Madison, and Matt Gomia and Ryan Duritsch each had 10. Sophomore Jesse Rutherford led the Indians with 13 points from the guard position.

“Well, they’re a good team. There’s no doubt about that,” Carlisle coach Don Ridinger said. “They had some really good guards and big kids. We thought with their big scorers out, that would be to our advantage. But they answered that question and played really well. We did not shoot well and had a lot of turnovers. This is a learning lesson for us.”

Madison, 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the Southwestern Buckeye League Buckeye Division, will travel to Milton-Union on Friday. The Indians (3-2, 1-1) will host Preble Shawnee the same night.
