Prep basketball: Emrick erupts for 39 points, Franklin buries Eaton

EATON — Junior forward Will Emrick was the star of the show in Franklin High School’s 3-point shooting clinic Friday night at Eaton.

Emrick fired in 11 of the Wildcats’ 14 treys and totaled 39 points in a 91-49 Southwestern Buckeye League Southwestern Division boys basketball rout.

“Our guys had a great week of practice,” Franklin coach Brian Bales said. “It started on the defensive end, then our guys stepped up. Emrick hit his 11 treys tonight, and I thought Kamry Fuller and Savon O’Neal really pushed the ball up the court well.”

The Wildcats, 7-4 overall and 3-3 in the SWBL, put up 28 points in the second quarter, turning an 18-15 lead into a 46-32 margin at halftime.

Franklin switched to an aggressive zone defense during that time, which caused a ton of problems for the Eagles (3-9, 1-4). The visitors then blew the game open with a 23-5 third period.

“We hung with them in the first quarter,” Eaton coach Denny Shepherd said. “Second quarter, they landed something like eight 3s. When that happens, it’s tough to respond to.”

Fuller scored 13 points and Zack Minton added 10 for Franklin, and O’Neal and Caden Johnson chipped in nine apiece. Dylan Jackson (14) and Hunter Frost (11) topped the scoring for the Eagles.

The Wildcats will travel to Northmont on Saturday. Eaton will host Oakwood next Friday.
