Ohio State football: 4-star running back de-commits

“Much love to the Ohio State staff for believing in my ability to play the game, and being from Ohio it’s been a dream of mine to play for Coach Urban Meyer,” he wrote in a note posted on Twitter. “With the changes to the coaching staff, I think it is best if I open my recruitment.”

Hubbard, who played at Scottsdale Chaparral last season but is originally from Akron, is the No. 15 running back in the country according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

“This is especially hard for me to say, but OSU will still be a top school of mine, but right now I feel it’s best to explore my options,” Hubbard wrote. “Please respect my decision and no media questions please.”

He committed to Ohio State last July.

Meyer retired after coaching the Buckeyes to a win over Washington in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.

He has been replaced by Ryan Day, who previously served as Ohio State quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for three seasons.

Hubbard is the third player who was verbally committed for 2020 to reopen his recruitment, joining Lejond Cavazos, a four-star safety from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., and Jake Wray, a four-star offensive lineman from Marietta, Ga.

Both announced in December they have reopened their recruiting but remain interested in Ohio State.

The 2019 class lost two players Jordan Battle, a four-star safety from Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas who flipped to Alabama and Doug Nester, a four-star offensive lineman from Huntington (W.V.) Spring Valley who ultimately signed with Virginia Tech.

Day was able to add five players to the 2019 class, including five-star defensive end Zach Harrison, the top-rated prospect in Ohio.

The 2020 class still has six members and is currently ranked No. 1 in the Big Ten and sixth nationally.
