National signing day: Ohio State recruiting updates

Ohio State closed out the morning with the signings of Tommy Eichenberg and Garrett Wilson.

Eichenberg, a four-star linebacker from Cleveland St. Ignatius, was committed to Boston College until Dec. 6, when he became the first player to commit to Ohio State after the announcement Ryan Day will take over for head coach Urban Meyer after the Rose Bowl.

Wilson is a five-star receiver from Austin (Texas) Lake Travis and the No. 16 player in the country according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

The six-foot, 181-pounder is the highest-rated player in Ohio State’s 2019 class — at least for now.

Day (and Buckeye fans everywhere) is hopeful of reeling in at least one more big fish before the day is over as Zach Harrison is set to announce his decision at 12:30 p.m.

Harrison, a five-star defensive end from Olentangy Orange High School in the suburbs north of Columbus, is the No. 4 prospect in the country (No. 1 in Ohio).

His final three are Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State.

**9:55  a.m. **

Ohio State lost a second verbal commitment to another school midway through the morning when Dwan Mathis signed with Georgia.

The four-star quarterback from Oak Park High School in Michigan originally committed to Michigan State before flipping to Ohio State in June.

His decision could be related to recent reports current Georgia freshman quarterback Justin Fields is interested in transferring to Ohio State.

LettermanRow.com reports Mathis also encountered a potential problem with enrolling early at Ohio State.

***9:45 a.m.***

Ohio State director of player personnel Mark Pantoni welcomed Craig Young to the fold via Twitter.

Young is a three-star athlete prospect from Fort Wayne, Ind., giving the Buckeyes’ 2019 class players from eight different states so far.

**9:31 a.m.**

Will Jestin Jacobs turn out to be one who got away from the Buckeyes?

Iowa fans sure hope so as the Northmont star signed with the Hawkeyes this morning.

The four-star linebacker committed to Iowa last summer before Ohio State made an official scholarship offer, but he fielded interest from the Buckeyes late in the season before ultimately deciding to stick with the Hawkeyes.

**9:19 a.m. update**

The 10th player to sign with Ohio State was Jameson Williams, a four-star receiver from St. Louis, but the 9 o’clock hour also brought bad news for the Buckeyes.

They were unable to convince Nick Broeker, a three-star offensive lineman from Illinois, to join the fold. He signed with Mississippi.

Offensive line coach Greg Studrawa is excited about his upperclassmen next season (including Josh Myers of Miamisburg), but depth could soon be an issue for the Buckeyes.

Including 2019 signees Harry Miller and Ryan Jacoby, Ohio State is set to have 12 scholarship offensive linemen on the roster next season.

Of course they can also add more prospects between now and the traditional signing day in February, and there remains the possibility All-American center Michael Jordan could go pro.

**8 a.m. update **

The second wave of Ohio State signings included Buford, Ga., five-star offensive lineman Harry Miller and Memphis (Tenn.) Whitehaven three-star tight end CorMontae Hamilton.

***FIRST UPDATE***

Ohio’s 2018 Mr. Football, four-star linebacker Cade Stover from Mansfield Lexington, was among the first group to send in their national letters of intent.

He is the No. 3 payer in the state according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

Also getting in early were athlete Steele Chambers, defensive back Ronnie Hickman, defensive lineman Noah Potter, defensive back Bryson Shaw, offensive lineman Ryan Jacoby and running back Marcus Crowley.

The first hour of signing day also brought some bad news, though it was not unexpected.

Jordan Battle, a four-star safety from Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas, signed with Alabama in a move that was anticipated by draft analysts since not long after the announcement Urban Meyer plans to retire after the Rose Bowl.
