Historic day at state golf for Lakota East boys, girls

It was a historic Saturday for the Lakota East High School boys and girls golf teams.

The boys finished a program-best sixth and the girls finished seventh in their first appearance at the Division I state tournament.

The Thunderhawk boys shot 646 (318-328) in the 36-hole event over the Scarlet Course at Ohio State University. Dublin Jerome (607) topped the 12-team field.

Powell Olentangy Liberty (616) was runner-up, followed by Green (628), St. Xavier (629) and Youngstown Boardman (630)

East was led by Kyle Schmidt (73-79-152). Schmidt finished 10th.

Drew Mahon (77-81-158) tied for 23rd, Peyton Houston (85-82-167) tied for 41st, Brock Aten (83-86-169) tied for 48th and Alex Dunaway (88-86-174) placed 58th.

Green’s Maxwell Moldovan fired a final-round 68 to win the individual title at even-par 144.

The East girls shot 668 (333-335) in the 36-hole event over the Gray Course at OSU. Olentangy Orange (602) won the title.

Centerville (612) was second, followed by Toledo St. Ursula Academy (613), Dublin Jerome (622), Cincinnati Ursuline (654) and North Canton Hoover (667).

The Thunderhawks were led by Bree Wilson (82-79-161). Wilson finished tied for 30th.

Grace Honigford (81-85-166) tied for 39th, Natalie Hamilton (84-87-171) and Liz Springer (86-85-171) tied for 48th and Camryn Eddy (95-86-181) tied for 60th.

Katie Hallinan of Cincinnati Walnut Hills was the medalist with a 3-under par 137 (68-69).
