Fish, Holderbach, Senger among selections in amateur baseball draft

Three local players and two others with local collegiate ties have been selected in Major League Baseball’s amateur draft.

• Recent Lakota West High School graduate Keegan Fish, a catcher and Ohio State University signee, was the 387th pick in the 13th round by the Miami Marlins.

Fish, who missed all but one at-bat of his junior season after undergoing knee surgery, hit .377 with three doubles, four triples, two home runs and 23 RBIs this spring for West. He was named to the Greater Miami Conference first team.

• Alex Holderbach, a Badin High School graduate and junior catcher at Eastern Kentucky University, was the 492nd pick in the 16th round by the Houston Astros.

Holderbach had a huge season at EKU this year and is one of three finalists for the Johnny Bench Award, given annually to the top NCAA Division I catcher.

He hit .352 with 55 runs, 12 doubles, two triples, 18 home runs and 79 RBIs, beginning the month of June as the national leader in RBIs. Holderbach was a first-team selection in the Ohio Valley Conference and carries a 3.89 grade point average while majoring in physical education.

• Hayden Senger, a Lakota East High School graduate and junior catcher at Miami University, was the 710th pick in the 24th round by the New York Mets.

Senger led the RedHawk regulars with a .344 batting average this spring and totaled 17 doubles, two triples, three home runs and 34 RBIs. He had one error and was a first-team Mid-American Conference player in 2018.

• Zach Spears, a junior left-handed pitcher for Miami University, was the 234th pick in the eighth round by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Greenfield, Ind., native was 4-5 with a 3.73 earned run average for the RedHawks this year. He struck out 88 in 82 innings.

• Nick Ernst, a junior right-handed pitcher for Miami University, was the 457th pick in the 15th round by the New York Yankees.

The Cincinnati native and La Salle High School graduate was 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA in nine innings this season. He suffered a torn UCL and underwent Tommy John surgery.
