College Insider: Lebanon’s Hartman off to fast start for WSU softball

Madison Hartman made a strong first impression with Wright State University’s softball team last weekend.

The freshman shortstop and Lebanon High School graduate came out of the season-opening Alabama-Birmingham tournament as the Raiders’ second-leading hitter with a .385 average.

Hartman started all five games and also had a double and two RBIs for WSU, which posted a 2-3 record.

Junior designated player Brianna Hutchinson (Lebanon) also made five starts and hit .286 with an RBI. Junior second baseman/outfielder Rebekah Lenos (Madison) played in three games and scored twice.

The Raiders will travel to Lynchburg, Va., for the Liberty Invitational this weekend, opening against Princeton on Friday at 3 p.m.

Men's swimming: Senior Keith Jessee (Lakota East) was part of six Top-5 finishes for Asbury (Ky.) during last week's Appalachian Athletic Conference Championships in Kingsport, Tenn.

Jessee won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:07.96. He was third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:27.55), 400 medley relay (3:32.78), 400 free relay (3:13.34) and 1,650 free (16:48.97), placing fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:12.84).

The Eagles were fourth among six teams in the final standings. They will compete at the NAIA National Championships, which run from Feb. 27 to March 2 in Columbus, Ga.

Women's basketball: Sophomore guard Jasmine Floyd (Lakota East) has played in every game off the bench for Case Western Reserve, averaging 8.6 minutes per contest.

Floyd has totaled eight points, 13 rebounds, 24 assists and two steals for the Spartans, who are 13-9 overall and 5-6 in the University Athletic Association.

Case hosts Emory (Ga.) on Friday at 6 p.m.

Women's swimming: Freshman Jessica Crowder (Talawanda) helped Wittenberg defeat visiting Hiram 119-41 on Jan. 26.

Crowder took first place in the 50-yard freestyle (27.25) and second in the 100 free (1:00.35). She was also part of the Tigers’ winning 400 medley relay unit (4:23.27).

Wittenberg will travel to Denison on Wednesday to compete in the four-day North Coast Athletic Conference Championships.
