College Insider: Lakota East’s Rodgers consistent performer for UC

Sam Rodgers has been a mainstay for the University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team this season, starting all 13 games she’s played in.

The junior guard and Lakota East High School graduate is averaging 9.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.2 steals per game for the Bearcats, who are 9-7 overall and 1-2 in the American Athletic Conference. She’s also shooting 82.8 percent from the foul line.

Rodgers was named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll for the first time last week after scoring a career-high 20 points and hitting five 3-pointers in a 69-57 victory over Southern Methodist on Jan. 6.

UC is back in action at home against Temple on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

» Sophomore guard Angelia Jackson (Lakota West) and sophomore center Bryn Mangold (Lakota East) are contributing for Otterbein, which is 8-7 overall and 4-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Jackson has played in every game and started 10, averaging 5.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.1 steals per contest. She’s shooting 42.9 percent from the floor.

Mangold has made 13 appearances and one start. She’s averaging 2.8 points and 2.5 boards per game while shooting 44.4 percent from the field and 75 percent from the foul line.

The Cardinals will visit Ohio Northern on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Women's indoor track & field: Junior Maya Andrews (Lakota West) set a Morehead State record last Saturday at the Marshall Women's Classic.

Andrews and freshman teammate DaKorria Winstead both crossed the finish line in a school-record 8.22 seconds in the 60-yard dash. They did not make the finals.

Andrews placed 10th in the 200 (26.54), while MSU senior Gloria Corona-Luna (Lakota West) finished 20th (5:29.32) in the mile run.

The Eagles will return to Huntington, W.Va., for Marshall’s Thundering Herd Invitational on Jan. 25-26.

» Dayton senior Abbie VanFossen (Lakota East) set a personal record with her 35th-place time of 5:20.19 in the mile run at Kentucky’s Jim Green Invitational.

The Flyers will be on the road again this week, competing in Indiana’s Gladstein Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Men's swimming: Freshman Aaron Polk (Ross) won two events for Wilmington in a 94-49 dual triumph at Manchester last Saturday.

Polk was victorious in the 1,650-yard freestyle (19:26.66) and 500 free (5:48.64) for the Quakers, who will be back in the pool hosting Mount Union on Saturday at 1 p.m.
