College Insider: Badin’s Holderbach having diamond success at EKU

Alex Holderbach is among the top players for Eastern Kentucky University’s baseball team this season.

The Badin High School graduate is a junior catcher/designated hitter for the Colonels, who are off to a 7-14 start.

Holderbach tops EKU with 17 RBIs and is tied for the team lead in home runs with three. He’s started every game and has two doubles, a triple, 15 runs and a stolen base while hitting .293.

The Colonels will return to action with a three-game home series against Morehead State this weekend, starting at 4 p.m. on Friday.

Men's basketball: Bluffton senior point guard Kevin Christie (Fenwick) has been named to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference second team.

He led the 11-15 Beavers in scoring (17.7), assists (4.5) and free-throw percentage (92.2) this year. His proficiency at the foul line is a single-season record at Bluffton, and he’s also the career leader in that category with an 87.4 percentage.

• Junior forward Alex White (Lakota East) started all season as Findlay made a run to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16, where the Oilers lost to Ferris State 80-65.

White led 28-5 Findlay in rebounding (6.6) and scored 9.6 points per game while shooting 54.7 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from the foul line.

• Senior guard Stedman Lowry (Lakota East) was the top scorer for Hillsdale (Mich.) this season with a 14.2 average and earned a spot on the Great Midwest Athletic Conference second team.

Lowry shot 37.3 percent from 3-point range and 87.2 percent from the charity stripe for the Chargers (21-10), who lost to Lake Superior State 81-67 in the first round of the NCAA Division II tournament.

Women's basketball: Dayton junior guard Lauren Cannatelli (Lakota West) leads the Atlantic 10 Conference in free-throw percentage (86.2) and ranks sixth in 3-point percentage (40.7).

She averaged 13.3 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game for the Flyers (23-7), who lost to Marquette 84-65 in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
