Fairfield High School quarterback Jeff Tyus said it was great to play with his family again.

Count Lakota East as one which doesn’t want to attend anymore family reunions.

Tyus has been sidelined since Aug. 31 with a shoulder injury, but he returned with a vengeance Friday night as Fairfield’s football team scored a 41-27 road win in front of a packed homecoming-game crowd at the Hawks Nest.

Tyus completed 20-of-27 passes for 332 yards and two scores while adding another 64 yards rushing as the Indians improved to 4-1 and 3-0 in the Greater Miami Conference.

“It felt great to play with my family again,” Tyus said of his teammates. “It was hard emotionally and physically to be out, but it is great to be back.”

Fairfield coach Jason Krause couldn’t hide his smile when asked about Tyus.

“Man, it was real nice to have him back,” Krause said. “His passing just opens up the offense so much. We are at full strength right now, completely healthy.”

The Indians offense racked up 553 yards on 67 plays. Michigan recruit Erick All had nine catches for 149 yards and a score, including several big receptions after East had closed within 28-20 in the final quarter.

“(Erick) had his best game of the year,” Tyus said. “My receivers made me look good. They got open and made plays.”

Fairfield struck first when Tyus found JuTahn McClain on a short pass that the running back took 61 yards for a score. After an East fumble, Krause gambled and Tyus found All for an 18-yard score on a fourth-and-10 play.

McClain finished the game with five touchdowns, four on the ground, as he ran for 139 yards and adding 96 yards through the air.

“Just a nightmare to contain,” East coach Rick Haynes said. “(All) is a nightmare, but then they have a back who is the fastest guy we have seen all year. They just have so many weapons.”

The Thunderhawks (3-2, 2-1) moved the ball all night and accumulated 396 yards of offense, but two crucial turnovers in the first half and a missed field goal after a long drive to start the second half proved to be fatal.

“The turnovers just killed us,” Haynes said. “I thought my kids played well, they played hard. But Fairfield is well-coached and has so many weapons they will make you pay for mistakes.”

Quarterback Sean Church was outstanding for East, rushing for 104 yards and scoring three touchdowns while also throwing for 167 yards. Fullback Jack Dobrozsi added 65 yards and a score.

“(Haynes) does a great job,” Krause said when asked about the East running attack. “We feel we can stop the run and they can run the ball, so something had to give. We gave up yards, but the turnovers in the first half were huge.”

Fairfield led 28-14 at the half and fought off East twice in the fourth quarter with McClain scores after the Thunderhawks had closed the gap to 28-20 and 34-27.

Evan Yablonsky had six catches for 70 yards for the Thunderhawks.

Next Friday, Fairfield will host Princeton and East travels to Oak Hills.
