Your checked bag will likely cost more next time you fly

Delta recently became the third airline to raise its checked bag fee, likely a result of increasing fuel costs hitting air carriers.

A checked bag on a Delta flight will now cost $30, up from $25. A second bag will cost $40, also a $5 increase, according to the Associated Press.

The change in cost is the same made recently by both JetBlue and United Airlines. American Airlines has not raised prices.

Southwest Airlines allows travelers to check up to two bags for free and low-cost carriers Spirit and Allegiant already charged $30 for the first checked bag.

Last year, U.S. carriers raised $7.4 billion from fees on checked bags and ticket changes, led by American, Delta and United, according to the Associated Press.

The airlines have been strapped recently by rising fuel costs, dropping profit forecasts as the prices continue their sharp ascent.
