‘World’s Longest Yard Sale’ is in full swing

Antique and memorabilia hunters -- and shoppers just looking for a unique item -- began converging on roadside stops along U.S. Highway 127 on Thursday as the 30th annual sale began.

States covered include Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio and Michigan. The sale runs through Sunday, the Chattanooga Times Free Press reported.

The majority of the route follows U.S. 127 from Addison, Michigan, to Chattanooga. Then it picks up the Lookout Mountain Parkway to Gadsden, Alabama.

The sale began in 1987 when Mike Walker, a former Fentress County executive in Jamestown, Tennessee, planned the event to encourage travelers to bypass interstates in favor of scenic routes, the Free Press reported.
