Butler County is using more technology, including hidden cameras, to catch criminals who place illegal credit card skimmers on gas pumps.
“Criminals have technology. I think our law enforcement has better technology,” Butler County Auditor Roger Reynolds said during a press conference this week about the latest efforts to catch the thieves.
The auditor said the thieves — he said they are not usually local — usually target gas stations along interstates and busy roads.
Here’s where Reynolds said the most popular gas station targets in Butler County are located:
- West Chester Twp.
- Madison Twp.
The gas station chain where inspectors say consumers are the safest? Kroger gas stations, according to Reynolds. He said those have the most secure gas pumps.
With two of the devices found last month, a total of 15 skimmers have now been located by Butler County inspectors since November 2015, according to the auditor’s office.
