Volunteers will clean up Great Miami River on Saturday

Volunteers are needed to help with the Clean Sweep of the Great Miami River, organizers said.

They will be cleaning up trash along the river from Franklin to the Ohio River from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, said Jeff Michel, director of Keep Middletown Beautiful.

Those who wish to help with the Middletown/Franklin areas are asked to meet at Bicentennial Commons at Carmody Boulevard and Central Avenue to gather equipment and trash bags before going to a specific spot to clean, Michel said.

Possible locations range from the Franklin Lion Bridge to the Trenton Bridge and several spots between: Ohio 4 at Carmody Boulevard, Miami County Park (Verity Parkway near Breiel Boulevard), Windsor and Maple, Dicks Creek at Amanda Elementary School, all along Carmody Boulevard Bicentennial Commons, and 6th Street and Maple.

Those who pre-register will receive water and T-shirts, he said.

Jimco’s will offer free boat rental to those helping clean on the river, Michel said

Volunteers are asked to register online to help speed up the process. Pre-registration is available at www.GreatMiamiRiverCleanUp.org.

Keep Middletown Beautiful works with Butler County Soil and Water Conservation District and others to recruit, organize and provide tools and equipment for volunteers willing to help with the annual project, Michel said. Dumpsters will be placed in Middletown and other locations along the river for the trash collected, he said.

Those interested in volunteering in Hamilton, including Rentschler Forest MetroPark and Joyce Park, should call Allen Messer at 513-785-7286.

Madison Twp. residents are asked to meet at 9 a.m. in the parking lot of Neil’s Excavating, 5170 Trenton Franklin Road.
