John Kasich on Colbert Show: ‘The debates are the dumbest thing going’

Ohio Gov. John Kasich went on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert Wednesday night and said the current presidential debates were “the dumbest thing going.”

The interview aired on WHIO-TV Channel 7.

“It’s sort of like tell your entire life story in 30 seconds,” Kasich said of the debates. “Harry Truman couldn’t get elected this way. The thing I love are the town halls.”

If that's true, tonight is a big night for Kasich since he will have his first nationally televised town hall on CNN starting at 8 p.m. Kasich, Donald Trump and Jeb Bush will each get about half an hour tonight to answer audience questions and questions from host Anderson Cooper. On Wednesday night, CNN had a town hall with Republican candidates Ben Carson, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz.

Kasich also told Colbert that President Barack Obama should not put forward a nominee to replace Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia who died on Saturday. Kasich said the next president should make the appointment.

“It’s an opportunity for people to number one vote for president and also have a say on who is going to be on the Supreme Court,” Kasich said.

Kasich, who came in second in the New Hampshire Republican primary, was on the show before back in November.
