UD police to test device used for messaging, crowd dispersal

The University of Dayton’s police department will soon test a device often used to disperse crowds.

UD police will test a device known as Long Range Acoustic Device, or LRAD for short, according to an alert sent to campus.

The device amplifies sound and is sometimes referred to as a “sound cannon.” It can be used provide messages or other sounds and is often used as a way to disperse crowds, according to reports.

UD police will conduct one demonstration at 8:30 a.m. Thursday in the UD Arena parking lot and at 3 p.m. at the same location, according to the campus alert called Flyer Aware.

The university is preparing for the NCAA First Four games at UD Arena and St. Patrick’s Day, which is Sunday.

St. Patrick’s Day celebrations at UD have sometimes led to large crowds. The Flyer Aware alert did not indicate whether UD police would ue the LRAD on the holiday.

Last year, students on Lowes Street reportedly threw objects at police and shot fireworks into crowds of people on the March 17 holiday. By 6:30 p.m. last year, officers arrived in riot gear and ordered parties indoors, though many at first ignored those commands.
