Police: Suspect who broke through Walmart doors after shoplifting incident faces drug charges

A shoplifting incident at Walmart led Middletown police to charge one suspect with drug charges, according to police.

Police were called to Walmart, 2900 Towne Blvd., at 8:35 a.m. Sunday on a report of a possible shoplifter. Police were told the suspect, when he was approached by loss prevention, had broken through the doors, pushing them off their tracks, and was running from the store, according to the report.

The suspect was seen getting into a vehicle and it was traveling toward Lowe’s. The vehicle was stopped at Plymouth Avenue and Fernwood Street and the suspect was identified as Derrick Mulligan, 27, at large. Mulligan was a passenger in the vehicle and Troy Power, 42, of South Lebanon, was the driver.

When Mulligan tried to leave the store with $358 in merchandise, the loss prevention officer grabbed the back pack.

Police said inside the vehicle there were multiple miscellaneous items, however, they were unable to confirm if they were from the Middletown Walmart.

Police also located a syringe on the floorboard and a loaded syringe that was field tested, and it came back as methamphetamine.

Mulligan was charged with petty theft, criminal damaging, and two warrants for theft. Power was charged with complicity for theft, drug abuse/methamphetamine and drug abuse/instruments.

Mulligan’s pre-trial hearing is Feb. 27 in Middletown Municipal Court. Power’s preliminary hearing is Feb. 25, according to records.
