“I have always wanted an antique store at this location because I think it’s a great location and offers items that you can’t buy at major retailers,” said owner Tom Schanie, who said his father owns the buildings at 235 & 233 Main, and 6 South D St., comprising an entire corner.
Schanie said he is starting the inventory at 3 Bears Emporium with antiques that have been collected by his family.
“There was no more room to store them, and I felt this would be a great way to make more room in my home and start a business at the same time,” he said. “Future inventory will mainly come from estate auctions. I want this to be a quality antique shop and not a junk store.”
Because Schanie acts as full-time caregiver for his 91-year-old father, the store initially will have limited hours, mainly by appointment and open for special occasions like during Music on Main and Small Business Saturday.
“I will have regular hours in the future when my responsibilities are (fewer),” he said.
Schanie is the sole owner, but will have assistance from friends Al Adkins and Adam Theele.
