Winter is here: Final 'Game of Thrones' season could air when?

The good news is you can watch every episode of “Game of Thrones” multiple times before the next season is out. The bad news is you may have to wait more than a year to find out what happened after Sunday night’s season finale.

Unlike normal series with which fans have to wait a few months between a season finale and the start of the next season, “GoT” fans will have to wait until the end of 2018 or even 2019 to find out what happens to Jon Snow, Tyrion and Cersei in the eighth and final season, Time reported.

HBO programming president Casey Bloys told Entertainment Weekly in June that the writers have to work on the episodes and get the production schedule hammered out. But the plan will form once they get deeper into the writing process.

Production is expected to start in October according to series star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. The actor known for his role as Jamie Lannister spoke with Collider about the series' future.

No matter when the season airs, it will be a short season of only six episodes, Time reported.

And while the last season will be aired eventually, "Thrones" fans may not have to worry when it does finally meet its end. HBO apparently is working on spin-off ideas that could air after someone hopefully claims the Iron Throne once and for all. They are looking at five potential storylines, with the hope that one will reach production. Bloys told Rolling Stone that if there would be another "GoT" series, it would be a prequel and not follow the final season.
