Virginia toddler shot, killed while playing outside Richmond home, police say

A 3-year-old Virginia boy was shot and killed as he played in his Richmond neighborhood, authorities said.

According to WTVR and WWBT, the shooting occurred about 4 p.m. Saturday as Sharmar Hill Jr. and his older siblings played along Southlawn Avenue in Hillside Court. After a bullet struck the boy, his 14-year-old sister carried him inside while the others alerted authorities, the outlets reported.

Emergency crews rushed the toddler to a nearby hospital, where he died, officials said.

Richmond police are looking into whether a suspect in a Friday carjacking may have been involved with the shooting, WTVR reported. Police arrested Antonio L. Harris, 21, on carjacking and weapons charges early Sunday, according to the news outlet. He is not currently facing any charges in the boy's death, officials said.
