The boys, ages 1 and 4, were left inside a Nissan Pathfinder along with a 2-year-old girl when their mother ran into a convenience store, WJTV reported.

When Jenna Payne, 25, returned, she told police her SUV was gone.

First responders spotted the vehicle floating in nearby Deer Creek and were able to rescue the 2-year-old girl before it floated downstream, the news station reported.

“As the vehicle floated down the creek, these individuals ended up only being able to rescue one of the three kids before having to swim to safety,” Leland police officials said in a press release.

A rescue dive team eventually located the submerged SUV and found the bodies of the two little boys.
