Toddler dies in daycare accident involving bean bag chair

A young boy in Utah is dead after a freak accident that occurred at a day care center.

A day care employee sat down in a bean bag chair that Leonardo Sanchez was hiding under Thursday, police told KSTU.

When the boy was discovered, he wasn't breathing. CPR was performed and Sanchez was rushed to a children's hospital, but he died a few hours later, according to KUTV. Police said the boy suffocated.

The boy's mother, Danielle Sanchez, is seeking answers about how her son was able to go unnoticed for a period of time and how he could have hidden under a bean bag chair without a staff member noticing, KSTU reports.

No charges have been filed yet in the case.

West Jordan Child Center released a statement to KSTU:

“We regret deeply the tragic death of a young toddler at our daycare facility. No words adequately describe the depth of the sorrow we feel. And, of course, we do not pretend to understand how devastating this is for the family. We know the family well, we grieve with them, and we pray that God will provide them the comfort and peace they inevitably will need.”

Sanchez would have turned two later this month. A family friend started a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for funeral expenses.
