Shots fired at funeral service following family feud, deputies say

Shelby County, Tennessee, deputies are looking for the person responsible for firing several gunshots at a cemetery during a burial service Wednesday evening. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

Deputies said those shots were fired after two brawls between rival family members.

Deputies said what started this confusion was a difference in opinion over the dead woman’s lifestyle.

Family members of the woman who was buried Wednesday at Memorial Park Southwoods Cemetery weren’t eager to talk to reporters after Shelby County deputies were finished questioning them about gunshots being fired at their loved one’s graveside.

SCSO told Fox13Memphis.com that two massive brawls took place before seven to eight shots were fired into the air by a family member of the dead woman.

Family members told deputies that the emotions of the two families have been high for the past several weeks, with some of them airing their disagreements over social media.

“Apparently, all of this has been taking place for a few weeks," SCSO Public Information Officer Earle Farrell said, adding that the dead woman "apparently committed suicide by driving her car into the Mississippi on Mud Island several weeks ago."

Deputies told Fox13Memphis.com that they are currently investigating what else led up to these shots being fired while also searching for the suspect.

“Of all the 200 that were here, nobody saw anything else. Nobody saw anything,” Farrell said.

Deputies said they are currently looking for a female family member of the woman who was buried.

She was last seen leaving in a blue or green van, deputies said.
