Prosecutors: Man high on meth breaks into home, eats Raisin Bran

A repeat criminal broke into a Seattle home and was found high on meth eating a bowl of Raisin Bran, prosecutors said.

A couple was sleeping when they woke to loud banging noises in their kitchen.

“They looked into the hallway from their bed and could see a light turned on for a short moment and then turn off,” a detective wrote in a probable cause document. It was the refrigerator door opening and closing.

Police said Robert Scanlon, 37, entered the home through the unlocked front door and grabbed a metal bowl, the Raisin Bran and a spoon. Investigators said he left shortly after the residents woke up and approached the kitchen. He left eating the stolen cereal.

Either before of after he entered the home, police said he urinated on Linden Avenue North then was dancing and clapping in front of a garage.

Someone called 911 about a suspicious person trying door handles in the neighborhood, and police arrested him shortly after he left the victims’ kitchen.

The residents were not hurt. Scanlon has a history that includes domestic violence, bail jumping and at least five drug convictions in Washington dating to 2001.

“Although he has no violent criminal history, until his drug addiction is addressed he is a substantial risk of committing a violent offense and is unlikely to be able to obey any court orders,” King County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Matthew P. Gross wrote in Scanlon’s charging document for residential burglary, a felony.

Scanlon remained in King County Jail Wednesday morning.
