Parents outraged after video shows premature newborn dropped in delivery room

Parents of newborn twins are speaking out after they posted a video on social media showing doctors dropping one of the babies on her head.

KNXV reported that Monique Rodgers gave birth to twin girls Morgan and Madison on Valentine's Day. They were premature, and examined by doctors right after they were born.

Their father, Derrick Rodgers, recorded their examinations when Morgan fell out of an employee's hand, flipping headfirst onto a table. According to the video, nurses grabbed the baby, preventing her from falling to the floor. The employee who dropped Morgan glances at another employee, but no one says anything

“It made me so mad. Like, I had to stop recording,” Derrick Rodgers said.

“I feel like she was treated like a sack of potatoes,” Monique Rodgers said.

Derrick Rodgers said he later spoke to the doctor he said dropped Morgan as he was recording.

"I told him, 'You dropped my baby,'" he told KNXV. "He had, like, a nonchalant look on his face. Then I showed him the video, and he had nothing to say after that."

The upsetting video was posted to Facebook on May 1.

"I was never notified she was dropped," Monique Rodgers said in her postaccording to The Arizona Republic. "I would like to prevent this from happening to other children being born at this hospital."

The video, which may be upsetting so some, can be seen below:

Five days later, Monique Rodgers said Morgan was given a head ultrasound, but she wasn’t told the reason for the ultrasound or the results.

"I did not find out that this test was done and the results of this test until this past Saturday when I brought up a different concern to her doctor," Rodgers said in her Facebook post. She also said her doctor referred her to a neurologist.

The ultrasound revealed Morgan had “a grade one germinal matrix small bleed,” her mother said.

The parents say that they are not sure if the bleed is because she was born premature or she was dropped, but Morgan is doing well, despite her small size. They told KNXV that they are concerned about her shaking.

“She does this like tensing up and her body kind of shakes,” Monique Rodgers said. “I would like to know if this was due to her having a low birth weight or if it was due to her being dropped on her head.”

The parents, who also have two older children, want the hospital to be held accountable.

“You know, an apology when it happened could’ve gone a long way,” Monique Rodgers said.

Dignity Health Chandler Regional Medical Center issued the following statement in response to the incident:

"Because of patient privacy laws and a request from the family not to release information, we are unable to comment specifically on this matter. The safety of our patients and their families is always our top concern. The medical team at Dignity Health Chandler Regional Medical Center takes this matter extremely seriously and is working to conduct a comprehensive review."
