Hurricane Dorian: Labor Day storms have not been kind to Florida

Labor Day has not always been kind to Florida residents.

If Hurricane Dorian makes landfall in the Sunshine State as a projected Category 4 storm, it will join a list of storms that have ruined the Labor Day holiday.

According to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, at least 25 hurricanes have come onshore since 1851, with seven storms hitting the Florida coast, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

The last Labor Day hurricane to hit Florida was Hermine, a Category 1 storm that hit the state's Big Bend area in 2016.

The most intense Labor Day storm to hit Florida was an unnamed hurricane that barreled into the Florida Keys on Sept. 2, 1935, with 185 mph winds, the Sun-Sentinel reported. More than 500 people were killed.

Storms were not named by the National Hurricane Center until 1953, the newspaper reported.

In 2004, Hurricane Frances packed winds of 105 mph and smashed into Palm Beach and Martin counties, the Sun-Sentinel reported. The storm caused 37 deaths in Florida and left more than 4.5 million people without power, according to the newspaper.

Hurricane David skirted the east coast of Florida in 1979, with winds ranging between 96 mph and 110 mph, before making landfall in Palm Beach County on Sept. 3, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
