"We have noticed there are some black children at your residence," the letter said in part. "Maybe you are running a day care or these are your children. In either case, we have put our house for sale … There is a reason for the saying, 'the other side of the tracks.' That is where these people belong."
The letter was sent to Nancy Wirths, the grandmother of nine, six of whom KSNW reported are African-American.
The Washington Post reported that although Wirths does run a day care, most of the children in it are her own grandchildren.
Wirths said the letter was an attack on her family.
“I look over my shoulder. I watch. The kids aren’t allowed to be outside,” she said.
KWCH reported that several other biracial families who live in Wirths' neighborhood said they are surprised she is the only one who received such a letter.
Wirths filed a police report. Wichita police, who are investigating the matter, said the person who wrote the letter could be charged with disorderly conduct.
"We love the neighborhood and the people who have supported us behind this, there's no need for us to move," Wirths told KWCH. "But if the people who wrote the letter need help packing, I'm sure we have quite a few people that would love to assist in the packing."
