A public health advisory to avoid romaine lettuce from the Salinas Valley region of California is over, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

"The contaminated romaine is past its shelf life and no longer available," health officials said on Thursday.

There were no deaths, but lettuce contaminated with E. coli made 167 people in 27 states sick; 85 people were hospitalized, the health agency said.

The Food and Drug Administration is investigating the cause.
