Neil Young has been granted U.S. citizenship, officially becoming an American citizen after living in the United States for 54 years.

On Wednesday afternoon, Young accompanied by his wife, Daryl Hannah, received his naturalization papers at the Los Angeles Convention Center, according to Rolling Stone. He has struggled to obtain dual citizenship due to delays around the "good moral character" provision on the immigrant application. Young admitted to smoking marijuana, and it had apparently slowed the process.

Young has been vocal about participating in the 2020 election.

"I sincerely hope I have exhibited good moral character and will be able to vote my conscience on Donald J. Trump and his fellow American candidates, (as yet un-named)," Young wrote on his website in November 2019.

Young lashed out at Trump on his 2017 album, “The Visitor.” On the track “Already Great,” he makes a not-so-subtle dig at Trump’s 2016 campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.” “You’re the promised land, the helping hand,” Young sings in the first of many digs against the president. “No wall. No hate. No fascist USA.”

On a Jan. 22 post on Young's website, he's pictured saluting in front of a sign that says, "DEMOCRATS REGISTER TO VOTE HERE."
