Baby found dead inside hot car at North Carolina shopping center, police say

Police said a 1-year-old boy died Thursday after his mother left him in a hot car for hours while she was at work.

Police in Pineville, North Carolina, said the boy was found around 5 p.m. inside a car at the Mcmullen Creek Shopping Center.

According to officers, the boy's mother works at the shopping center and didn't realize she left him in the car until she got off.

Police said after she found her son, she frantically called 911 for help.

When officers got there, they said they tried to save the boy and rushed him to Atrium Pineville, where he was pronounced dead.

Temperatures climbed to the mid-80s Thursday.

It's still unclear exactly how long the baby was in the car, but investigators said it was for a prolonged period.

Detectives are talking to family members and checking surveillance video at the shopping center.

No criminal charges have been filed against the mother at this point.
