Antwon Rose shooting: Police officer charged with criminal homicide

Update 12:30 p.m. EDT June 27: At a news conference Wednesday morning, Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala said that his office has received Rosfeld's complete personnel file and that what it contained gave him concerns. An attorney for Rose's family told reporters Rosfeld has a "history of abuse" and should have never been sworn in as an East Pittsburgh officer.

Zappala said Rosfeld was remorseful after the June 19 shooting that claimed Rose’s life. Video showed Rose opened his hands to show they were empty before he ran from police on the night of his death, and Rosfeld told investigators that he never saw Rose with a weapon, according to the district attorney.

Rose died of a 9mm shot to his back fired by Rosfeld, according to prosecutors.

“You don’t shoot someone in the back who is not a threat to you,” Zappala said.

Rose was fatally shot as he was running from a car Rosfeld pulled over on June 19 after the officer noticed what appeared to be bullet holes in the back of the car. Rosfeld spotted the car less than 15 minutes after a shooting was reported in nearby North Braddock.

Zappala stressed Wednesday that Rose’s presence in the car, which authorities believe was used in the North Braddock drive-by shooting, did not make Rose a party to the crime.

Authorities have determined that Rose did not fire a gun the night he was killed.

“Antwon Rose didn’t do anything in North Braddock other than being in that vehicle,” Zappala said.

Police have charged Zaiwan Hester, 17, with attempted homicide charges in connection to the North Braddock shooting.

Update 9:50 a.m. EDT June 27: Authorities said in a criminal complaint filed against Rosfeld that Rose did not fire any shots in a drive-by shooting reported in North Braddock just before Rose's death.

Update 8:55 a.m. EDT Jun 27: Rosfeld's attorney, Pat Thomassey, told WPXI that his client was no longer in custody by 8:55 a.m. Wednesday. He bonded out.

Update 8:40 a.m. EDT June 27: Authorities have filed charges against a 17-year-old in connection to a drive-by shooting reported just before Rose was shot and killed on June 19.

County police said Zaijuan Hester, 17, was with Antwon Rose and a driver in a car that was involved in a drive-by shooting that wounded one man in North Braddock. Officials said Rosfeld spotted the car with what appeared to be bullet holes in it about 13 minutes after the shooting. He pulled over the car. After handcuffing the driver, Rose and Hester ran from the back seat, authorities said.

Update 8:35 a.m. EDT June 27: Rosfeld's attorney, Pat Thomassey, confirmed that his client turned himself in to authorities early Wednesday morning.

Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala will hold a briefing at 11 a.m.
