Man tells police he was scammed out of buying two cars on eBay

A Middletown man told police he bought two cars off eBay and he was told to purchase $2,100 in gift cards.

But after he bought the gift cards from a local drug store, and phoned in the gift card numbers, he was left without any vehicles, according to a Middletown police report.

The 39-year-old man told police he bought a 2008 Honda Accord for $1,400 and a 2005 Honda Accord for $800 off eBay. The person who allegedly was selling the cars told the man he needed to buy $2,100 worth of gifts cards and give him the codes on the back of the cards.

After calling in the codes, as he was told, the man was supposed to receive the cars, he told police.

When the cars never arrived, he called the phone number back and the woman said she doesn’t work for eBay and he was “most likely scammed.”

Police told the man to file a report with eBay and to check with his bank to see if he has any fraud protection, the report read.
