Red, White and Kaboom festivities take place Saturday

Drive-Thru fundraiser

The 10th annual Fairfield Premium Drive-Thru fundraiser will be from 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday, July 3 at the drive thru, 1729 Happy Valley Drive.

The benefit this year will support the daughters of the Pruiett family — Allyson, Kierston and Morgan Pruiett and Lauren Redmon. Their father died on June 7. Money raised will go to general expenses for the daughters.

The fundraiser has traditionally raised around $3,000. Anyone who wishes to set up a booth cand do so for a $25 fee. Parking will be at the Northwest Bowling Lanes and will be $3.

All proceeds will go to the family.

FAIRFIELD — Music is said to soothe the savage beast and the traffic beast exiting the annual Red, White and Kaboom fireworks show at Harbin Park has been tamed for the last couple of years with an extra half-hour of music.

The annual Independence Day fireworks show can be seen in several neighborhoods surrounding downtown Fairfield, and about 10,000 people watch the annual show — this year on Saturday, July 3 — from either Harbin Park, Village Green Park and the Aquatic Center. There are usually thousands at Harbin.

“It works especially at Harbin,” said parks and events manager Ben Strickler. “Everyone’s so condensed and congested.”

“Eighty percent of the people, maybe 90 percent, are going out the front gate,” Strickler said. “Some people stick around and some people leave right away.”

Fairfield Police Chief Mike Dickey said this year people need to be a little more patient on exiting Harbin Park.

“We expect it to be well attended because of the cutbacks of many communities,” Dickey said. “We’ll get everyone out as quickly as we can. We always have people that are in a rush to leave. The streets can only handle so many cars at one time.”

Festivities at both parks start at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, and Aquatic Center activities start at 8 p.m.

New at Harbin

One new feature at the fireworks will be in Harbin Park. Starlite Express, a tractor which pulls several barrel-shaped carts, will be run from 4:30 to 9 p.m. at Harbin Park for a nominal fee.

“We have a longer period to entertain people. We decided to do a little more,” Strickler said. “People can enjoy, it’s fun for the kids.”

Fireworks enforcement

Dickey said residents should remember fireworks displays in neighborhoods are “unsafe and prohibited.”

“We will be enforcing fireworks laws,” he said. “It’s a great annual affair, come on out and be safe.”
