Monroe seeking state funding to help $1M improvements to Ohio 63 intersection

Monroe is seeking Ohio Public Works Commission funding for improvements on Ohio 63 at Lawton Avenue.

City Council approved an emergency resolution to apply for the OPWC’s State Capital Improvement and/or Local Transportation Improvement programs to cover about $483,391 of the estimated $986,513 project. City Manager Bill Brock said the city’s share of the overall project costs would be about $503,122, based on the engineer’s estimate.

Council approved the emergency request so that the project can be reviewed and evaluated by the OPWC District 10 committee for the possible funding. If approved, Brock said the OPWC funds would become available in July 2020.

Brock said about 29,366 vehicles travel on Ohio 63 through the city each day.

The scope of the project would extend the third lane along westbound Ohio 63 from American Way to Lawton Avenue and make signal improvements. It would also provide a dedicated left turn lane for westbound traffic including a large amount of semi-truck traffic that use Lawton Avenue.

Other improvements planned include a dedicated right turn lane from Lawton Avenue onto Ohio 63; and a guardrail to protect the traffic signals on northeast and northwest corners of American Way.

Officials said the project will complete the remaining intersection improvements at Lawton Avenue that were part of the Interstate 75 interchange project in 2000.
