Monroe providing grief counselors after student’s death

Monroe schools are providing counselors tonight and Thursday after one of its students lost her battle against cancer.

Madison Smallwood, 12, who would have been a sixth-grader in the fall, died Tuesday morning after battling cancer for four years, according to her family.

The district convened a support team available to meet with students, parents and school personnel from 5-7 p.m. today and 9-11 a.m. in the high school Media Center.

“We will always remember Madison for her smile and courage,” the district posted on its Web site. “Her positive impact on our district and community will never be forgotten.”
