Middletown’s only post office undergoing nine months of needed repairs

Major construction has started on Middletown’s United States Post Office, and work is expected to took at least nine months, according to a post office official.

Supervisor Peyton Holmes said the post office, 320 N. Verity Parkway, is coming off of its foundation and needs the repairs. Workers from Structural Systems Repair Group from Cincinnati are digging up the foundation on the north side. Holmes said it took several days to dig down 80 feet to the concrete footer.

Eventually, Holmes said, the foundations on the south side and the front of the building also will be repaired. The work is expected to be complete in October, he said.

Holmes said he didn’t know the estimated cost of the renovations. He said the postmaster was out of town.

Holmes said the work was needed after post office employees started noticing cracking in some of the walls.

Besides the foundation work, Holmes said ceiling tiles are being replaced in hopes of “brightening up” the interior, he said.

Holmes said he’s concerned about the parking at the post office throughout the construction process. There is no parking on the north side of the building because of the construction. Holmes said some customers have complained about the limited parking spaces at the post office, which will remain open throughout construction.

The post office, the only one in the city, opened on Nov. 12, 1962, three days after the original post office on North Main Street closed. That building was later demolished, according to historical records. The original post office opened in 1917.
