Jacksonville International Airport staff and the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said the plane, American Airlines flight 1090, landed safely.

Officials with JIA said they are looking into a report of smoke or fire in the cockpit.

American Airlines said in a statement that the issue stemmed from a “mechanical issue” that surfaced after a passenger spilled a soda.

“A passenger spilled a soda on an electrical item in the main cabin,” the statement said. “Our highly trained crew quickly reacted, and resolved the issue. Out of abundance of caution, the crew made the decision to divert to (JIA).”

The Boeing 737 landed safely.

There were 149 passengers and six crew members on board.
